The Choice Is Yours

When Porsche decided to build its first SUV over a decade ago, people cried “blasphemy.” But the Cayenne became an undeniable sales success, and so Porsche followed it up with the smaller Macan. For 2018, Porsche offers the Macan lineup with the choice of either a capable four-cylinder base model or an unstoppable V6 upgrade, giving buyers another choice when configuring their luxury SUVs.

Performance

The Macan is definitely the Porsche of small SUVs. As with the larger Cayenne, Porsche tried to imbue the Macan with the spirit of its sports cars by emphasizing driving dynamics. Porsche wanted to prove that practical vehicles don’t have to be boring.

The base model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It may be the smallest engine in the Macan lineup, but the 2.0-liter still produces an impressive 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Like all other Macan models, the engine comes standard with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. All Macan engines also feature engine start-stop systems for better fuel economy.

The four-cylinder Macan will do 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package and launch control. It will also achieve an EPA-rated 22 mpg combined (20 mpg city, 25 mpg highway).*

Porsche also continues to offer a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 in the Macan S and GTS models. This engine produces 340 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque in the Macan S, and 360 hp and 369 lb-ft in the GTS. Porsche says the S will do 0 to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, while the GTS takes just 4.8 seconds (both with Sport Chrono). Top speeds are 156 mph for the S and 159 for the GTS. Both models are rated at 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway).*

Finally, the Macan Turbo sits at the top of the range with the most powerful engine, a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6. It produces 400 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to get the Macan Turbo from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package, and on to a top speed of 164 mph. Despite its larger engine, the EPA rates the Macan Turbo at the same 19 mpg (17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway) as the 3.0-liter Macan S and GTS models.*

Features

The 2018 Porsche Macan is a five-door, five-seat small luxury SUV. It’s offered in the aforementioned base, S, GTS, and Turbo trim levels, which all correspond to the different available powertrains. Pricing starts at $47,800.**

Standard equipment on the base model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, Porsche Communication Management infotainment system, SiriusXM® satellite radio, Bluetooth®, power tailgate, LED daytime running lights and taillights, automatic headlights, three-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, multifunction sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback, and more.

The Macan S includes all of the applicable standard equipment from the base model, plus a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, 19-inch alloy wheels, and other features. The GTS model builds on the Macan S, adding air suspension, model-specific 20-inch wheels, SportDesign Package, sport exhaust, Porsche Dynamic Light System, brushed aluminum interior trim, Comfort Lighting Package, and GTS badging.

Finally, the Macan Turbo adds the 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, plus Porsche Active Suspension Management adaptive suspension, navigation, 7.0-inch touchscreen display, 14-speaker Bose® surround sound system, heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, Alcantara headliner, front Adaptive Sport Seats with heating and memory package, and other equipment.

Design

Just as its performance capabilities are more sports car than sport utility vehicle,  the 2018 Porsche Macan also features more dynamic styling than the average crossover. The front end borrows heavily from the Cayenne but has a more aggressive look than the larger model. The massive grille and side intakes—with their own nice detailing—give the Macan a truly sporty look.

The Macan also features a clamshell hood, an interesting element you won't normally find on an SUV. Side blades that run along the lower edge of the doors help hide some of the Macan’s bulk and make for a unique styling element. The roofline is low with a steeply raked D-pillar, giving the Macan a silhouette that’s unlike the typical SUV box shape.

The interior also borrows from Porsche’s sports cars. The driver gets a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, and available sport seats provide nice bolstering for spirited driving. The instrument cluster’s round dials and the dashboard-mounted analog clock give the cockpit a classy look. On the technology front, the Macan is available with the recently updated Porsche Communication Management infotainment system and Apple CarPlay™.

The Macan is still a practical SUV, too. It boasts 17.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear bench seat in place, and 53 cubic feet with the bench folded. The rear seat has a 40/20/40-split folding configuration for added flexibility.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2018 Porsche Macan includes anti-lock brakes, Porsche Stability Management stability control, Porsche Traction Management traction control, lane departure warning, rearview camera, Park Assist, and a full complement of airbags.

Verdict

The 2018 Porsche Macan combines dynamic styling and performance with the practicality of an SUV.
