2016 Porsche 911 GT3
A True Driver's Car
If you’re in the market for a sports car, chances are Porsche has a 911 for you. There are coupes, convertibles, and semi-convertible Targas, cars with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, ones built to cruise, and ones built to storm the Autobahn. Porsche is quite good at taking the iconic 911 and spitting out a seemingly never-ending list of variants.
So where does the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 fit in? The GT3 is traditionally the most pure driver’s car of the 911 lineup. Other versions may be more powerful or more luxurious, but the GT3 specifically emphasizes the driving experience. It’s the most track-worthy 911, and has the closest ties to Porsche’s racing heritage. That’s made the GT3 an enthusiast favorite, and it’s why you should definitely take a test drive.
Powertrains and Performance
There are many 911 models, but none like the GT3. It sits between more pedestrian 911 variants and the power-crazed 911 Turbo, emphasizing all around performance and channeling some of Porsche’s racing experience. What makes a GT3 a GT3? Big power from a naturally-aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive, and a no-nonsense attitude.
Porsche considers this 991 model the fifth generation of GT3, but this is the first time Porsche has introduced a new GT3 engine since the car was launched. It’s a 3.8-liter flat-six, producing 475 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. It’s offered exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated PDK transmission. The GT3 will do 0 to 60 mph 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 195 mph, according to Porsche. It will also achieve 17 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway),* according to the EPA.
This latest GT3 is much more complex than previous models, but Porsche says its many gadgets help maximize performance. For example, the PDK transmission is used in other Porsche models, but for the GT3 it was given a complete overhaul, with shorter gear ratios with closer spacing, faster shift times, and even more tactile shift paddles. The engine also rests on adaptive mounts that can switch from soft to hard, essentially making the engine a part of the chassis. That, along with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), lets the GT3 shift its ride from racecar sharp to road car comfortable on the fly.
Another notable feature is the rear-steering system. At slow speeds, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels to enhance agility, and at higher speeds they steer with the front wheels for added stability. Model-specific bodywork—including new front and rear fasciae, widened fenders, and a giant rear spoiler—help improve aerodynamics.
Features and Trims
The 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 is available only as a two-door, two-seat coupe. There is only one available trim level, and the base price is $130,400.**
For that price, you get all of the GT3-specific performance accouterments, plus features like 20-inch alloy wheels, an LED lighting system, sports exhaust system, sport seats, paddle shifters, and a version of the Porsche Communication Management infotainment system.
Design
Many cars are designed to look fast, but the 911 GT3 was designed to be fast. Its unique styling not only differentiates the GT3 from other 911 models, it also helps the car perform better. The major changes include a new front fascia with massive air intakes, wider fenders (the GT3 is 1.7 inches wider than a 911 Carrera at the rear), a new rear fascia with some scoops and slats of its own, and a big rear spoiler. The GT3 also rides 30 millimeters lower than other 911 models.
All of these modifications improve the GT3’s aerodynamic performance, helping the car cut through the air with minimal effort, but also increasing the downforce that allows it to grip the road. Also helping grip are the sticky tires mounted on big 20-inch wheels, sheltered by those widened fenders. In addition to its functional elements, the GT3 body gives the classic 911 shape a whole new attitude, and makes the GT3 look like a racecar.
Unlike a racecar, though, the GT3 does have a few creature comforts. There’s a dashboard display screen, supplemental display in the gauge cluster, and sport seats designed to keep drivers comfortable. The GT3 not as luxurious as other 911 models, but that’s in keeping with its more focused nature.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, and a full array of airbags.

The 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 is a car for people who place driving excitement above all else.
