All-New Boxster Spyder is Porsche's Latest Ravishing Roadster
Sometimes it helps getting back to basics, although describing the recently debuted Porsche Boxster Spyder as “basic” is somewhat of a misnomer. Porsche’s latest creation is a less content-driven car than what we’ve come to expect, focusing solely instead on driver enjoyment. In truth, though, the new Boxster Spyder captures the very essence that has solidified Porsche’s leading position as one of the finest makers of sports cars.
Let’s start by examining the engine. The 3.8-liter flat-six is tuned to produce 375 horsepower and is mated exclusively to a manual transmission, benefting both weight savings and driver enjoyment. According to Porsche, this setup allows the Spyder to sprint (not crawl) its way to 60 miles per hour in a lightning-fast 4.3 seconds, and on its way to a top track speed of 180 mph.
Granted, the Boxster Spyder doesn’t lack the motivation to hustle along at breakneck speeds, but power isn’t the only thing makes the Spyder so formidable. It uses brakes from the 911 Carrera S, is the lightest model in the Boxster lineup, and sits 20 millimeters lower to the ground than the standard Boxster.
Additionally, the Spyder uses the same manually operated cloth roof from the previous car.And did we mention how stunning it looks?
Inside, the Boxster Spyder takes a more austere approach to design. In order to reduce weight, there’s no standard radio or air-conditioning--all of which is is totally in-keeping with the car’s laser-sharp focus on driving pleasure. Of course, both features can be ordered as optional equipment at no cost, but it’s certainly nice to see a car so unabashedly committed to pure on-road excellence.
Starting at $82,100,* the new Boxster Spyder will launch in October and is now available to order.
