California Man Makes Headlines with Million-Mile 1964 Porsche 356C

Guy Newmark of San Pedro, California has driven his 1964 Porsche 356C regularly since he received it as a college graduation gift from his father, who’d purchased the car a month after its original release. The vehicle, appropriately named “Blu” for its rich cobalt color, has been Newark’s main mode of daily transportation for over forty years.

“The 356—Porsche’s first production model, introduced in 1948—is the car that put the brand on the map,” Newmark told The Wall Street Journal in an interview. Newmark is a dedicated fan of the brand—he also owns a stunning 1962 356B cabriolet, which he’s had since 1971.

Newmark, a yacht broker, racked up most of his miles on Blu as he traveled around both California and the country to get signatures on contracts. Some years, he said, he drove over 30,000 miles. Within the car’s million-mile legacy, Newmark has rebuilt the engine only twice, and the first transmission rebuild happened at 900,000 miles. Other than a new paint job, almost everything about the car is original.

When thinking back to when he got Blu, Newmark says, “I had a big smile on my face that day, and I’m still smiling.”
