Porsche 911 GT3 RS: The Perfect Balance between Race and Sports Car
The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS, revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, is a happy compromise between track-bound race cars and street-legal sports cars. It offers the power and performance of a race car with the maximum amount of motorsport technology possible in a street-legal sports car. Now drivers can have the feel of being on a track even when they’re not.
The 911 GT3 RS goes beyond the previous 911 GT3 thanks to a reworking of its drivetrain, aerodynamics, and lightweight design, beating the 911 GT3’s lap time at Nuerburgring Nordschleife by five seconds and making it the fastest current generation 911 to go around the famous German track.
The 911 GT3 RS owes its performance capability to highly developed motorsport technology. The sports car comes equipped with a 4.0-liter flat-six engine producing 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque, paired with a PDK transmission. This engine boasts the largest displacement and greatest power of any naturally aspirated engine in the 911 family, offering the driver a 0 to 60 mph time of only 3.1 seconds.
Adding to the speed of the 911 GT3 RS is its carefully crafted, intelligent lightweight design. The roof is made of magnesium and the engine and luggage compartment lids are made of carbon fiber, along with other weight saving materials built into the body, making the RS model 22 pounds lighter than the 911 GT3. The lighter roof helps lower the car’s center of gravity, improving its lateral dynamics. This is just the beginning of the motorsport technologies contributing to the RS model’s performance.
Inside, the driver will find Alcantara trim and bucket seats reminiscent of the carbon bucket seats found in the 918 Spyder. Buyers can opt for the Sport Chrono package which includes the Porsche Track Precision App for use with smartphones. The app allows drivers to calculate lap times via GPS and log data for vehicle speed, lateral acceleration and deceleration, and acceleration in the driving direction, on their smartphone.
