Porsche Names the Top 5 ‘Best Porsche Concept Cars’

Some made it to production. Some never got past the idea stage. Over the years, Porsche has come up with a number of incredible designs to tempt the car enthusiast. In a recent episode of the ‘Porsche Top 5’ video series, the automaker released the definitive list of ”the best Porsche concept cars.” See if you agree.

5. Porsche 754 Concept

The inspiration for the 911, complete with all the distinctive elements, can be seen in the 754 Concept. From the horizontal joint to the mudguards and round spotlights, at certain angles you can’t tell where the 754 concept ends and the 911 begins.

4. Porsche 989 Concept

The first Porsche four-seat sports car concept came in 1989 and was undoubtedly ahead of its time. While the 989 never made it to production, it inspired the Porsche Panamera introduced in 2009.

3. Porsche Cayenne Cabriolet Concept

A combination SUV and Cabriolet, this hybrid design is noteworthy for its distinctive roll bar. Introduced in 2002, the Targa roll bar is still an inspiration to Porsche designers today.

2. Porsche 918 Spyder Concept

Debuting at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2010, the 918 Spyder was designed as a plug-in hybrid. Motorsport tradition influenced the concept, which marries low fuel consumption with pure driving pleasure. Today, the Spyder production version hardly differs from the original Spyder concept, a fact that Porsche is particularly proud of.

1. Porsche Mission E

The number one Porsche concept in Porsche’s opinion is the Mission E. It represents the DNA for Porsche electric sports cars to come. The goal was to keep iconic Porsche design elements while at the same time introducing new ones. The exposed horizontal instrument panel and the rear bucket seats create a sense of comfort combined with sportiness. The Mission E production version is currently in the works.
