Safety Tips for Summer Sun Protection

Summer is well on its way and the Porsche Silver Spring team wanted to share some important summer sun safety tips with you! These tips will keep you and your family safe during those sweltering summer days and help you prevent sunburn, heatstroke, and even more long-term effects.
Umbrella
Whether you're going to the beach or plan on enjoying a fun summer event, bring an umbrella! Perfect for more than just rain, an umbrella can provide portable shade, no matter where you are. Prolonged direct sun exposure can lead to heat exhaustion and more. Don't want to carry an umbrella around? A sun hat is an excellent hands-free option for blocking some of the sun's harshest rays.
Stay Hydrated
The sun can have a massive impact on hydration–or lack thereof. Stay hydrated by drinking enough water, replacing lost electrolytes, and avoiding things that may dehydrate you further, like alcohol, caffeine, or stress.
Avoid the Midday Sun
It may not always be possible, but try avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day. During these times, take a break to eat a snack, enjoy an indoor activity, or at the very least, find some shade. The midday sun produces more heat and damaging UV rays than any other time, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.
Sunglasses
It's important to protect your eyes from the sun as well. Direct exposure to sunlight can be uncomfortable at best, but can even damage your eyes. Choose a quality pair of sunglasses that will block the sun. You'll be preventing headaches, sunburn on your eyes, and protecting your long-term eye health.
Sunscreen
Just like your eyes need protection from the sun, it's important to wear sufficient sunscreen. Apply at least 30 SPF every couple of hours while outdoors. You may need to reapply even more often if you're swimming or playing sports. Sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging can all result from skipping the sunscreen.
Cover Up
If you have trouble remembering to reapply sunscreen or are sensitive to its ingredients, consider covering up. Light-colored fabrics that dry quickly will keep you feeling cool and protected. For even more sun protection, look for clothing that has a UPF rating of 50 or higher.
